Basil has been in cultivation for many years. Believed to have originated in Asia and Africa, it is thought that it may have been brought to ancient Greece by Alexander the Great.
Sweet basil is a spicy, sweet, anise (licorice) and clove-like. Other varieties include cinnamon basil, lemon basil and Thai basil. Some, like Thai basil, are bolder and spicier, while cinnamon basil combines classic basil flavor with the gentle spice of cinnamon.
Note: Fresh basil leaves are delicate; handle gently; wash and chop just before using.
